Injury to Mothers

When mothers suffer from birth injuries, it can be extremely serious and have life-changing consequences. Birth injuries can be made worse if the doctor, nurse or midwife responsible for your care is negligent.

The most common types of injury include:

• Vaginal tears – a skin or muscle tear near or around the vagina
• Fissures – this is a tear around anus resulting in pain
• Episiotomy – this is a surgical cut to enlarge the vagina that can lead to excessive bleeding, infections and rectal problems

• Caesarean – this involves cutting into the abdominal wall and through the uterus, and can lead to blood loss or an infection

• Pre-eclampsia – symptoms include high blood pressure, protein in the urine, headaches, weight gain and blurry vision. Mistreatment can result in serious injury, and, in extreme cases, can prove fatal.

• Infections
