In most cases, the causes of cerebral palsy happen before birth. However, around 20% of children with cerebral palsy develop the disorder as a result of damage to their brain during the delivery process.

A lack of sufficient oxygen causes damage to the brain and may result in the baby having physical or intellectual (often both) disability. Caring for a child with a disability can be extremely challenging for the parents and other family members.
